Paizo Is Making A Starfinder Comic
Paizo And Comic Books
Paizo comic books have been around since 2013, as far as I could tell by a quick Google search. If I'm wrong and they've been around earlier than that, I’m sorry I’m not huge into comics myself. The point is this has been going on for a while. Here's what Paizo had to say about the new and upcoming Starfinder comic book:
"For the first-ever Starfinder comic book series coming to stores, we hand-picked the best creative voice to help, James L. Sutter. They have also served on staff with Paizo for over a decade. Mr. Sutter was also a creative director for Starfinder. They played a critical role in the development of the worlds and the systems for Starfinder, and they worked at translating the fantasy elements of Pathfinder into Starfinder."
So, what is the comic going to be called? "Angels of the Drift." James L. Sutter writes this along with Edu Menna, who is also credited with working on Army of Darkness. "Starfinder is all about exploring the galaxy and having epic adventures, but at the end of the day, it's also about your real-world experience as a player sitting around a table having fun with your friends," said writer Mr. Sutter. "I think the comic zeroes in on that feeling. No matter how high the stakes get, both the game and the comic are meant to be fun."
Starfinder Iconics
If you haven't been aware of Paizo's strategy around their iconics already, what you should know is that the iconic is not meant to represent an ancestry or a species; they are meant to represent a class from the table top role playing games. If you've been looking for more history, more lore, more story around the iconics, you're going to get it in these comic books. The following iconics are going to be in the story itself. They will probably be the central main characters. I don't know if other iconics will make appearances here. If we don't see them in this comic series, I do think we will see more of them in future releases:
Navasi, a human Envoy and reformed pirate. They are a fast talker and serve as the group's de facto Captain.
Obozaya, the Vesk soldier. They are the muscle.
Ciravel, a Precog Elf who uses hover chairs to assist in their mobility.
Quig, the Ysoki mechanic. They like their robots and flamethrowers.
Keskodai, the Shirren Mystic. They are the team medic and priest of the death goddess.
Something else to note is that this story will be taking place during the Drift Crisis. The drift, if you're unfamiliar, is a different plane of existence that was created by three gods who melded together into one super artificial intelligence and made their own dimension. Traveling through this dimension became the de facto way to travel in space, and during the drift crisis, something went wrong with it.
We do know that currently, there are three covers done but what we don't know is if this is just going to be a three-book series or if there will be more to come in future releases. All of the book covers will be able to be put together to form a larger image.
What If I Don’t Like Comics?
What if you're not a huge fan of comic books, guess what? There's still going to be something in these books for you as a player or Game Master of the tabletop games. There will be playable character stats for the heroes, new character options which will be inspired by the comics, and if you participate in Starfinder Society games, you will be able to use these options in those games.
For those who cannot wait to get their hands on these exciting comics, they can be purchased individually as they are released. Alternatively, a subscription model is available through the Paizo website, with a release schedule of one month for Pathfinder and the next month for Starfinder, alternating between the two.
Paizo Partners With Industry Veterans
It is important to note that while Paizo owns the intellectual property, Dynamite Entertainment is the company producing the Starfinder Angels of the Drift comics. Dynamite was founded in 2004 and has become a powerhouse in the industry, with ownership and control of over 3,000 characters. They have worked with many creators in the comic book and entertainment industry, including Kevin Smith, Alex Ross, John Cassidy, Garth Ennis, Mark Guggenheim, Mike Carey, Jim Krueger, Brett Matthews, and Matt Wagner, among others. Dynamite is also home to many other best-selling properties, such as The Boys, The Shadow, Vampirella, Warlord of Mars, Bionic Man, Game of Thrones, and Seal Team Six just to name a few.
Starfinder Angels of the Drift is scheduled for release in June of 2023, so fans do not have long to wait. For those who prefer to support local businesses, your local comic bookstore or game/hobby store may be able to order or pre-order the comics for you individually.
My Problem With The Comic Books
However, for fans like me who already spend a lot of money keeping up with the latest releases in the Starfinder universe, the addition of comic books to the mix can pose a problem for our wallets. Nonetheless, I cannot wait to see how this new medium will add to the Starfinder universe and expand upon the stories and characters we have come to love.
If you want to support local businesses, we encourage you to talk to your local comic bookstore or game and hobby store. Often, they're one and the same, and they should be able to order or pre-order these comics for you, or you can use one of the links within this blog post and buy it for yourself.
if you're a fan of Starfinder and Pathfinder, you're going to want to add these comics to your collection. Don't forget to support your local businesses and keep an eye out for The Maple Tables upcoming videos and blogs.
Thanks for stopping by, everyone!
